THE NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BUREAU ENDORSES RESTORATIVE APPROACHES IN RESIDENTIAL CHILDCARE
In September 2008 the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) published a broadsheet on Restorative Approaches in Residential Child Care, written by Transforming Conflict’s director, Dr Belinda Hopkins. Highlight 242, a peer-reviewed article, has been distributed as a hard copy to all NCB members, professionals working across the Children and Family services and there is growing interest in the field across the UK. The article can also be downloaded as a pdf file:

This document is a more formal version of the initial piece, written by Dr Hopkins in 2007, and published on their website. The first document contained more anecdotal material, practical tips and some useful case studies:

The highlight is more grounded in the existing literature and research, and extensively referenced.
Walsall trains Residential Care Staff in Restorative Approaches
In the first half of 2008 Transforming Conflict’s Residential Care Training Team have been training Walsall’s care staff in restorative approaches.
Feedback from participants has been very positive:
‘Excellent course – one of the most beneficial that I have done in my career.’
‘I think the way the course was run was brilliant – felt like I learned a lot by having fun.’
Very relaxing and put across by the trainers in an ‘easy to understand’ way.’
The training is on-going and a recent development ahs been the production of a DVD illustrating the use of a face to face restorative meeting in a care home - the first footage of this environment. This is not yet finished but may be made more widely available. Watch this space!
